Nigerian begins use of VPN as Federal Government suspend Tweeter in Nigeria

The Federal government announced the indefinite suspension of Twitter’s operations in Nigeria follow the recent deletion of one of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet which according to them violate their terms of use

The presidency issue a statement on Friday through the office of the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, announcing the suspension

The statement read as:

The Federal Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, citing the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.

The Minister said the Federal Government has also directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, as the suspension is apparently yet to take effect at the time of filing this report, Nigerian  on Twitter expressing their displeasure at the Federal Government’s move and suggesting alternative ways to continue the use of the platform with the use of Virtual Private Networks to have access to Twitter
