Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala become first woman and first African to lead WTO as her appointment confirmed today

The two time former Nigeria finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been officially appointed as the new director general of world trade organization

The WTO director general which have been vacant for some months have now been occupied by Okonjo-Iweala
This was made known by the organisation’s verified twitter handle where they tweeted:

Iweala who have been on the run for this position since the recent year with her opponent from South Korea who recently withdrew from contesting for the position

The success of the appointment follow the full support from the newly inaugurated US president, Joe Biden and the entire US government
According to the US trade representative, they cited

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s tenure as director general of WTO will begin on March 1st 2021
